December 26th – Snow Response Update

Over 11 inches of snow fell overnight in Sudden Valley, and the SVCA Snow Crew began plowing and sanding the main roads at 4:30am this morning. Baby Plow is also in the Valley again today after working past 7p last night.

Gusty winds, additional snowfall, and low temperatures may cause power outages similar to the outages experienced last night by Sudden Valley residents.

As of 8am this morning, the temperature dipped to 12 degrees, with a wind chill of -9 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service shows 12 degrees as a record low temperature for Bellingham, last seen in 1971.

Residents are asked to stay off the roads, if possible, due to poor road conditions. Whatcom County Public Works has made a similar request. Road conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate throughout today and this evening, with an additional 1-3 inches of new snow expected later today.

Sudden Valley’s Snow Response continues to focus on main roads today, with the effort expanding to secondary roads tomorrow. You can help by staying off the roads, and parking your cars in your driveway or a designated parking area.

Vehicles blocking the plows or emergency services can have a devastating impact. If you must abandon your car, please notify Security at 360-603-6136 and give your contact info, the location of the vehicle, along with the make and model.

Snow Removal Update

Merry Christmas, everyone!

With the white Christmas, snow removal crews have been busy working on the roads, but service will be ending today at 4pm. Those crews will be going home to be with families for the rest of Christmas Day. Workers will return to continue clearing roads at 4:30am on Sunday the 26th.

At this time, we are asking residents to please stay home and to not drive unless absolutely necessary. Thank you and stay safe & warm out there!

PREPARE FOR SNOW EVENT

READY FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS?

Forecasts are predicting 6 – 10 inches of snow for Sudden Valley and the surrounding area beginning this evening through Sunday.

Our Snow Crew plans to begin plowing all the main roads beginning at 4a, Dec. 25th. The goal is to have all the main roads cleared by 10a. Baby Plow will be in the Valley as well.

Please help by parking cars in driveways.

Please make sure you are stocked up in the event roads are not passable and prepared for the possibility of a power outage. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing over the next several days.

Where possible, we encourage residents to park in their driveways and garages to make way for snow removal vehicles. Driving a plow through our community’s narrow roads can be very dangerous. Snow removal becomes more difficult as road conditions worsen. Everyone can help keep these areas clear so the SVCA Snow Crew can maintain the streets safely and do so more efficiently in safer driving conditions.

Vehicles blocking the plows or emergency services can have a devastating impact. If you must abandon your car, please notify Security at 360-603-6136 and give your contact info, the location of the vehicle, along with the make and model.

SVCA’s Snow Crew will be opening Gate 5’s Overflow Parking Area this evening, Dec. 24th.

Stay safe and Happy Holidays,

~The Snow Crew

Resources for Flood Victims

Sudden Valley Community Association has been made aware of some resources that can be accessed by our residents who have been impacted by the recent floods in Whatcom County. These resources are not provided by SVCA and staff may have very limited knowledge regarding these programs.

First, we have been notified by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office that DSHS support is now available to Whatcom County residents (including Sudden Valley). A Mobile Community Service Office will be operating November 30th and December 1st at Valley Church in Everson. Those seeking financial assistance through DSHS can check with that office between 9am and 4pm those days or call 877-501-2233 for help over the phone.

If you believe you may qualify for financial assistance, we recommend reading the entire original statement from the Sheriff’s Office (found here) and reviewing the Disaster Cash Assistance Program details that can be found at www.washingtonconnection.org.

Second, we understand that mental health is an issue that can frequently be overlooked during these disasters. Whatcom County has posted some helpful guidelines and links to resources for those in our community that may be struggling.

To find out more, please refer to the following link to Whatcom County’s site: https://www.whatcomcounty.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2985

Take care and stay safe everyone!
