Board of Directors Candidate Interviews

Dear Sudden Valley Community Members,

On April 22, 2021, the SVCA Board of Directors conducted interviews to fill the vacancy on the Board. Currently, board meetings are being conducted virtually via Zoom and streamed to our SVCA YouTube channel. A separate virtual meeting room, not streamed to YouTube, was used to conduct these interviews. The intent of this process is to ensure that each candidate can be interviewed independently, and no candidate has an advantage of hearing the other candidate’s responses or questions. This allows for a fair process for all candidates. When we host this type of meeting in-person, it is standard for all candidates to be kept outside of the meeting hall and each candidate is invited in one at a time to interview. The expectation was that, just like last year, the candidate interviews would be recorded and posted to YouTube after the meeting.

I hope this gives the community a better understanding of why the board candidates were interviewed in a separate zoom meeting. However, I regret to inform the community that there was an inadvertent failure to record the interview session.

The SVCA Board and Interim GM deeply regret that this has occurred. Our members have the right to participate in the process by viewing these candidate interviews. This Board ran on a platform of transparency, and we believe it is the most important core value for our Board and Community to operate under. This mishap does not provide the adequate transparency that is vital to protecting the integrity of our elections and nominations process.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to apologize to the membership for this mistake. As Board President, I take responsibility for this failure to record the session. I will be working with our Interim GM, the Board, and the Nominations and Elections (N&E) Committee to develop a process checklist to ensure this does not happen in the future. This will establish a consistent methodology for both in-person and virtual meetings for staff, the board, and the N&E committee to follow so that the community is delivered a consistent process.

Consultant Professional Services for Executive Recruitment for General Manager/Chief Operating Officer

Sudden Valley Community Association (SVCA) is seeking proposals from qualified individuals or firms to conduct professional services for the executive recruitment of the next SVCA General Manager/Chief Operating Officer (GM/COO).

We are seeking an executive search firm with proven experience placing city manager or other executive level positions for similar sized communities.

• Firms must have a minimum of five (5) years demonstrated experience and expertise in the successful recruitment and placement of high-level management positions in similar sized community. Additionally, respondents shall have, within the past twenty-four (24) months, successfully placed at least two (2) executive level candidates.

• The consultant must deliver a proposal that shows the firm is able to execute the general scope of services of the RFP and provide a negotiated contract for approval by the Board to hire a new GM/COO no later than October 28, 2021.

The proposal must be received no later than 4:00 PM, Tuesday, May 4, 2021. Late submittals will not be considered.

2021 Firewise

The SVCA Maintenance Department will be conducting 2021 Firewise from April 19th to May 10th. This is a 4-week program dedicated to cleaning up from winter storms and reducing the fuel for wildfires near structures.

Instructions:

  • Stack piles of trimmed or fallen branches perpendicular to the street, in a neat pile, acceptable pile sizes are between 5′ – 10′.
  • Please try to stack them so they all point the same direction with thick end facing the street.
  • We can accept branches from 1” to 7” in diameter. Branches need to be at least 2’ in length so they can be chipped.
  • We cannot accept garbage, dimension lumber, cones, small debris (leaves), ferns, twigs, and blackberry vines as they will clog chipper.

If you have items that are too small for chipping, they can be dropped off at the Clean Green location on the scheduled disposal days from May-September. Clean Green information will be sent out & posted as we get closer to May.

Marina Boat Launch Closed 4/6-4/8

The Boat Launch area at the Marina will be closed off and unavailable to residents from Tuesday April 6th through Thursday April 8th. The purpose of this closure is to realign the Marina Launch Gate, improving access for residents.

Sudden Valley Golf Club Job Listing

Sudden Valley is an 18-hole, public golf facility that was established in 1971. We are currently accepting resumes for 2021 seasonal grounds maintenance positions. 
This is a 40+ hour/week job. Overtime is available. Weekend work is required. Position runs through October 31st, 2021.
Qualities the applicant should possess are: a positive attitude, an attention for detail, punctual, and the ability to work well as a part of a team. 
Golf course maintenance/landscaping experience is preferred, but not necessary. Possessing knowledge for the game of golf is also a plus. 
The applicant must be at least 16 years of age; have a reliable source of transportation and valid U.S. identification. Position is subject to a pre-employment drug test.
The applicant must be able to lift 60+ pounds and work through inclement conditions. 
The compensation range for this position is $14.00-15.00/hour. DOE. Uniforms, raingear, boots, all PPE supplied. Golf privileges included.

Learn about the new Lake Whatcom Stormwater Utility Service Area and its funding priorities. The Service Area is the reason for the new $147.52 fee that appeared on your property tax bill this year. Reviews of Lake Whatcom water quality, cleanup efforts and programs are also on the agenda.

Executives, council members and commissioners from the county, the city and the water district will attend. This is a once-a-year chance to comment and question your elected officials.

Public comment is scheduled for the end of the meeting using the Zoom raise hand feature. Comments and questions are limited to 3 minutes and should pertain to Lake Whatcom and its watershed. The meeting video will be posted on the city’s meetings webpage.

Today we sent out a Gym Q&A Edition of the eBlast containing helpful information about scheduling appointments for the Fitness Center.

If you aren’t signed up for the eBlast, don’t worry! The Q&A is also on the Recreation Page, which you can view by clicking here. Scheduling will open up on Wednesday, March 10th and the Rec Center will open on Thursday, March 11th, so be sure to take a look before then!
